From CHRISTIANA GOKYO, Jos
THE Leaque for Human Rights in Plateau are at
dagger drawn with the state government, over an alleged physical assault
attempted abduction of the directors of the league, Barr. Nankin Bagudu last
Saturday by people alleged to be agents of the state government.
In separate release in Jos on Monday, the
league for Human Rights Civil Liberties Organisation, North Central zone and
Christian Foundation for Social Justice and Enquiry condemned the assault on
Barr. Bagudu.
The two leaques described the assault as a new
survival strategy by Oga to let loose a terror squad on innocent citizens of
the state who disagree with his regime.
They maintained that they incurred the wrath of
Governor Joshua Dariye, because of their principle stand against the
decision of the House of Assembly not to act on the letter of the Attorney
General of the federation urging the legislature to investigate into
allegations of corrupt practices against Dariye and subsequently impeach
him.
According to them they had made their positions
known to the governor and the Assembly, including a visit to the House at
the invitation of the Speaker, Barr. Simon Lalong, to acquaint himself with
the rules of the House.
The two groups stated that five men in a black
Peugeot 504 with registration number AA 72 PTT, visited Barr. Bagudu in his
office and subjected him to thorough physical assault.
According to the statement, one Chris Giwa,
their leader who was later apprehended by the police, confessed to the
Divisional Police Officer (DPO) at A Division that he is a special
assistant to the Plateau state governor, and was acting on directives from
above and promised the police to produce the suspected assailants when asked
to do so.
Another attack was launched on Barr. Bagudu, as
he was being led to his office by sympathisers.
The action was in line with the position of the
human rights groups on the refusal of the state Assembly to investigate the
allegations against Dariye.
He told the police that the Dariye
administration considered the press statement on the issue by the groups as
rule.
The statements were signed by Barr. Israel Dan
Auta (legal officer) Human Rights , Steve Aluko Daniel Zonal Libertien
Organisation, and Mr. Joseph Christian Foundation.
