FRIDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2004           Shell gets Senate�s ultimatum THE Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources (downstream) has given Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) up till next week to submit a written reply to a petition from a family in Ogoniland. Chairman of the Committee, Senator Azu Agboti, said at a public hearing in Abuja that had received a petition against SPDC from the Gbu family over an alleged oil spill in 1993. The family alleged ``total neglect'' by the company over their plight, saying the spill had rendered them ``useless in terms of source of livelihood.'' Through their counsel, they are claiming from SPDC the sum of 100 million dollars ``for loss of earning for 11 years to 87,000 citizens'' as well as immediate soil treatment to restore productivity of the land. The spill was blamed on lack of turn-around maintenance (TAM) of SPDC's gas delivery pipelines which resulted in an explosion and consequently devastated more than 66.37 acres of farmland. Earlier, Agboti had warned that he would not hesitate to issue a warrant of arrest to the SPDC legal adviser for failure to attend the hearing. The Abuja relations manager of SPDC, Chief Larry Ossai, who led the Shell team, promised to return next week with a written reply to the petition.
