LAGOS — THE Federal Character Commission (FCC) said yesterday that there was a hundred percent compliance level with its principle of adequate representation in public service by the six geo-political zones of the country.
The commission also said there was at least 95 per cent compliance level by states of the federation in terms of placement of people in government offices.
Chairman of the FCC Committee on Transport, Aviation, Works, Housing and Urban Development, Mrs. Eno Bassey, on an oversight visit to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), in Lagos said the committee was mandated to take a tour of federal government’s agencies, with a view to probing into perceived imbalances in the civil service.
According to her, a close monitor of the agencies had shown that such imbalances were very minimal where they exist at all. Mrs Eno, who is also a federal character commissioner representing Akwa Ibom State, said the committee was in FAAN to remedy perceived imbalance in the agency. She said because there was high level of unemployment in some states of the federation, such states would be given special consideration in job placements.
She said all the committee noted were minor cases of imbalances which it had advised the management to correct in order to eliminate people’s perception of the agency in that regard.
"We have looked through the books, and on the whole, FAA has done quite well," said Eno, who urged the agency’s management to always abide by the agency’s principles.
Earlier in his welcome address, FAAN’s Managing Director, Engr. Gambo Umar, said his agency had done everything possible to ensure that all parts of the country were adequately represented.
Engr. Umar sought the collaboration of the federal characters commission, especially in the area of training.
Other members of the 7-member committee include Mr. Lawal Ibrahim Funtua, Mrs. Margaret Gom, Deacon S.O. Idowu, Mr. Joe Offor, Alhaji Muhamed Kaura and Alhaji Aliyu Mohammed, with Alhaji Abdullahi Kangiwa as secretary.
