‘Why Delta Govt hasn't rehabilitated displaced Warri Corner residents’

By Austin Ogwuda
Friday, December 10, 2004

Asaba — DELTA State government yesterday gave reason why it was not keen on taking measures to rehabilitate persons that were rendered homeless when their homes were sacked by the military personnel that invaded and razed their settlement popularly called ‘Warri Corner’ sometime ago.

This set of displaced persons were residing at Sandfill I and II in Warri, an area which has been claimed to belong to the Navy.

State Commissioner for Ethnic Relations and Conflict Resolutions, Mr. Ovuozorie Macaulay gave the explanation when he appeared before the State House of Assembly yesterday to defend the budget appropriation to his ministry.

Macaulay had told the Assembly’s Finance and Appropriation Committee that the major challenge facing him in 2005 was how to bring back the oil companies that fled Warri, including the investors scared away during the heat of the Warri crisis, maintaining that peace and stability that once eluded Warri had finally returned.

He pleaded for adequate funds to enable him rehabilitate persons displaced in the Warri area, as well as to go round to ensure that the fleeing companies return to Warri come 2005. He further said that many displaced persons would be rehabilitated too.

But a member of the committee, Mr. Frank Enekorogha, representing Burutu I constituency wanted the commissioner to explain why the state government had not refused to rehabilitate the persons displaced when the ‘Warri Corner’ settlement was razed, the commissioner immediately exonerated the state government for the lapses, saying "you will recall that the decision to evacuate those people on the water side came from the Presidency."
