Abia community leader condemns Anambra crisis

Friday, December 10, 2004

LAGOS — A community leader in Abia State, Mr. Gabriel Imaga-Oleh, has condemned the lingering crisis in Anambra State, describing the situation as not only embarrassing but also uncalled for.

Reacting to the bomb blast in Governor Chris Ngige’s Lodge, Mr. Imaga-Oleh who is the National Chairman, Umuchiakuma Development Association, UDA, Odum Chiakuma Autonomous Community in Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State, said the dimension the crisis had taken was unfortunate.

Speaking in an interview in Lagos, the UDA chairman stated that if the crisis was not urgently and permanently resolved, it might truncate democratic structures in the state.

According to him, since the warring parties had variously agreed to sheathe their swords and let peace reign supreme, there should be no need again to foment any trouble under whatever guise.

Imaga-Oleh pointed out that the lingering political crisis would definitely prevent any meaningful investor both foreign and local into Anambra state, adding that this would not make the government meet the yearnings and aspirations of the people.

"The crisis is now assuming dangerous dimension with the bomb blast in the Governor’s Lodge. This is unfortunate and uncalled for. It won’t bring any meaningful business investment to the state and this will slow the growth and development of the area.

"If this continues unabated, the people in Anambra State will reap little or no dividends of democracy because of this wanton destruction of public utilities provided through tax payers’ money," he further stated.
