R EIGNING African
Champions, Enyimba Football Club of Aba, yesterday made history by retaining the
coveted African Champions League title with a 5-3 penalty victory over
Etoile du Sahel of Tunisia.
Enyimba which last year became the first club in the country
to win the cup, has by the latest triumph set the record of being the first side
in 36 years to retain the Champions Cup.
Though the Aba boys appeared complacent
and uncoordinated in the early minutes of the match, they later seized control
of the game and raided the Tunisian club’s goal mouth ceaselessly.
One of such relentless raids led to the
handling of the ball by Etoile defender, Mohamed Miladi in the 43rd
minute resulting to a penalty which goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama did not waste
time to blast home, giving Enyimba a 1-0 lead at half time.
The Peoples Elephants scored the
second goal within eight minutes into the second half when midfielder, Muri
Ogunbiyi released a left-foot blinder from close range.
Etoile which won the first leg in Tunisia
2-1, made the tie an aggregate 3-3 in the 63rd minute when defender Zoughi
headed home from Baya’s free kick.
The match remained stalemated, although
Enyimba’s Damian Udeh’s header was well saved on the 89th minute by Etoile’s
goalkeeper, Nigerian-born, Austin Ejide.
Anticipating that the match might go into
penalty shoot-outs, Enyimba substituted Enyeama for penalty specialist, Dele
Aiyenugba, a tactic which worked previously against another Tunisian side,
Esperance, in the competition’s semi-final.
Coach Okey Emordi’s tactic worked again as
Aiyenugba spectacularly saved Ben Frej’s kick with penalties at 2-1 to Enyimba.
The Peoples Elephants then scored all their
remaining kicks with the last by Obinna Nwaneri throwing the stadium into
frenzy.
