Ibadan opposes Alaafin’s headship of
Oba council

A
declaration by the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII) that the Alaafin
of Oyo cannot chair the Oyo State Council of Obas on permanent basis has added
a new dimension to the dispute.
CCII
National President Bode Amoo claimed at a press conference in Abuja at the
weekend that the Olubadan also has a claim to the post and demanded that the
Oyo State Government should revert to the rotational arrangement contained in
the Amendment Edict 6 of October 30,1991.
He
said anything to the contrary would be arbitrary, ill advised, unfair, unjust
and against all historical reality and values of the Yoruba race and therefore
unacceptable to Ibadan people.
Said
he: "May it be understood that this is not a threat, but we, the people of
Ibadanland, reserve the right to ask our revered royal father, the Olubadan of
Ibadanland, to stop attending the meeting of the Oyo State Council of Obas and
Chiefs, rather than face the indignity of serving as vice chairman on
rotational basis, in a body he has historical reason to head too”.
The
CCII blamed the error of making the Alaafin the permanent chairman of the
council on the military which it said lacked historical knowledge.
"One
of the glaring absurdities of military rule was the flagrant disregard for the
culture, tradition and historical antecedents while taking decisions on issues
that affect the lives of the governed”.
Amoo
specifically blamed former military Governor of Oyo State Ike Nwosu for
erroneously making the Alaafin the permanent chairman between 1995 and 1997.
“This was a misguided step as the history of the present Oyo State does
not support such a decision.
“By
this decision, Nwosu, ignorant of the history of the Yoruba race, misguided
himself or was misguided by individuals or groups seeking to create disharmony
and discord among the traditional rulers in Oyo State.
