Abuja to subsidise more AIDS treatment

Abuja plans to increase the number of HIV/AIDS patients benefiting from its subsidised anti-retroviral drug treatment from the present 50,000 to 350,000 by 2007.

President Olusegun Obasanjo disclosed this on Sunday during a media chat with representatives of Nigerian children.

He said his administration, “which took bold initiatives in 2001 to mobilise the world to tackle the deadly disease”, is according it a topmost priority.

Obasanjo also fielded questions on a wide range of issues, including conflicts, the Niger Delta and the Anambra mayhem.

He said conflicts could be as a result of religious, political, ethnic or economic differences. According to him, political conflicts are often instigated by injustice. Citing the Anambra saga as an example, he said the situation at a point overwhelmed the security operatives on ground. He had to quickly order that more armed policemen be drafted to restore order.

During the last mayhem, he said the police arrested 19 of the suspected hoodlums caught in pillaging government property, and that some of them have been arraigned in court.

On the Niger Delta, the President blamed the violence in the area on the breakdown of the community values, but said it has abated with the surrender of about 1,000 AK-47 and G-3 rifles by the militia groups.

In his view, Niger Delta communities have responsibilities to reposition the area for a permanent peace by not inciting youths to violence which often engenders a vicious cycle that promotes poverty by discouraging job creation.
