Opposition mounts against Senate Minority Leader

By Adetutu Folasade-Koyi

and Paul Mumeh, Abuja

The crisis that has polarised the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) may have spread to the Senate as some members of the party in the upper chamber are allegedly scheming to upturn the election of its new officers.

Last month, Senators Lawali Shuaibu and Aba Aji were elected as the new Minority Leader and Minority Whip, to replace Senator Usman Al Bishir and Yushua Anka, who opted to resign rather than be impeached.

If the impeachment had sailed through, it would have been the second time for Al Bishir who was also impeached from office in the First Session of this Senate. A letter read at the plenary session by Senate President Adolphus Wabara indicated that Shauibu and Aji were supposed to resume office on the last legislative day this year, on December 22.

But Daily Independent investigations reveal there are some underground moves, from the national ANPP NEC and the ANPP Senate caucus to upturn the election and maintain the status quo.

A legislator from the Northwest disclosed that some “members of the caucus are not really disposed to the leadership of Shuaibu, but he was elected because the Northwest was emphatic that it owes it to its population and that they had conceded it to the North East, they wanted back the slot.”

Another factor militating against Shuaibu is that he belongs to the Sokoto State Governor Attahiru Bafarawa’s camp in the ANPP, coupled with his absence at the two NEC meetings, which held in Abuja and Maiduguri respectively.
