Akinyele predicts attacks on governors after end of tenure

By Dennis Mernyi

Special Correspondent, Abuja

Former Information Minister, Alex Akinyele has predicted that some state governors, because of their dubious and criminal life styles would be lynched and mobbed by their people soon after the end of their tenure in 2007. But he argued that President Olusegun Obasanjo should not be stripped of the immunity provided in the constitution of the Federal Republic as being agitated for by some people.

Akinyele told Daily Independent in an interview in Abuja that the country has only one president and that his immunity should stand anywhere in the world “but not the state governors.”

Advising both the President and the state governors as well as other elected officers on the need to respect the immunity provided for them in the constitution, Akinyele who became visibly angry over why some privileged people in the country abuse their rights, stated that many people would end up being very sad at the end of their tenure.

His words, “let me tell you, the President is the president, and his immunity should stand anywhere in the world. What we should borther ourselves about here is that those who are given immunity should behave well because the time will come, immunity or no immunity, when some of them will be lynched publicly in this country”.

He also applauded President Olusegun Obasanjo for at last bowing to the wishes of the majority of Nigerians by constituting the national confab committee, which he said was long overdue adding, “The fact that the President decided to bow to the wishes of the people is a plus for him and for us the people”.
