Engineers blame weak economy on poor leadership

By Uwakwe Abugu

Bureau Chief, Warri

The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) at the weekend wound up activities marking its 37th National Engineering Conference and Annual General Meeting in Effurun, Delta State, blaming the nation’s weak economy on poor economic vision by the leadership.

The engineers in a six-point communiqué read by the national president, Mustapha Bulama, stated that “the challenge facing the engineering profession in Nigeria is that of the engineers ability to practice the profession for the development of the nation’s economy.

“The ability is not necessarily limited by competence, but more by limited opportunities built into economic structure”, they posited. According to the communiqué, though the theme of the conference was on the issue of local content development in the Nigerian economy, “the challenges go beyond the Nigerian shores”.

They observed that the “National response to these challenges must be a combination of affirmative government policies to protect local capability and creation of an environment that stimulates development of local practitioners and entrepreneurs.” On the knotty issue of local content in the oil and gas sector, they said “NSE regrets the low local content of expenditure in the oil and gas sector after nearly 50 years of oil and gas production”.

The situation, the NSE stated is caused by factors such as lack of local manufacturing capacity of components needed for construction of oil and gas facilities. They also fingered “lack of vision and poor management of indigenous manufacturing companies such that they do not pursue production of components that meet international standards”.
