Deregulation without efficient mass transit is invitation to chaos, says Tinubu

By Lekan Sanni,

correspondent, Lagos

Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Lagos State at the weekend said that without an effective mass transit programme, the policy of deregulation and price changes in the oil sector would always create crisis for the nation.

Receiving in audience members of the House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum Resources, Tinubu noted that the deregulation policy being pursued now could be described as putting the cart before the horse.

According to the governor, the lack of effective transportation system in Nigeria means that Nigerians have very high incentive to put their vehicles on the road all the time.

Tinubu said that a more positive policy, which would have discouraged people from putting their cars on the road all the time should have been considered noting that fuel marketers should be involved in the deregulation debate so that a more agreeable position could be arrived at.

He also told the committee members that the rampant cases of vandalisation of NNPC pipelines could be attributed to the high poverty level across the country, easy access to the pipelines and lack of adequate security. He reiterated the demand of the Lagos State Government for compensation from the NNPC as a result of the ecological impact of the damage in the Ipaja area of the state.

Chairman of the committee, Yam Brisibe told the governor that his team was in the state to inspect the facilities of the PPMC and asserted that there should be a permanent solution to the problem relating to availability, distribution and pricing of petroleum products.
