Last Updated: Monday, December 13th, 2004 HOME | Previous Page CFTU seeks unity among labour centers   By Victor Ebimomi reporter, Lagos   The Congress of Trade Unions of Nigeria (CFTU), one of the three labour centres in the country has called on the different labour movements in the nation to close ranks so that they can collectively fight injustices against the workers in particular and the masses in general. Speaking on the topic titled “ Prospect and Challenges of Trade Union Unity in Nigeria” at the 8th Annual Kalogbodi Memorial Lecture held in Lagos on Tuesday, the General Secretary of the congress, Didi Adodo, said the critical challenges before the labour community include the removal of the barriers that have led to the emergency of distinct unions for junior and senior staff, stressing that workers should be allowed the right to belong to one union across divides in a sector. According to him, given the present level of development in the country, there ought to be a single centre to foster strong unity among the workers in their struggles but warned that such centres should not evolve as a result of legislation from outsiders. “ CFTU believes that given our level of development and the centrifugal tendencies in the nation, Nigeria needs a single labour centre that can unite workers and fight for their interest. It needs not be a forced labour centre that is law induced. It has to be induced through ideological leanings and interest in work”, he said.   Copyright� 2004. All Rights Reserved.
