The whereabouts of the leader of the Movement for
Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Chief Ralph
Uwazuruike, has become an issue of controversy between the police and MASSOB
members.
The controversy ensued after a police raid at the weekend on
the enclave of MASSOB in Okwe, Imo State.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Chike
Nwabuwa, said police did not arrest any MASSOB member including Uwaruruike, but
MASSOB insisted that he was taking to an unknown destination.
The police denied claims that they shot to disperse the
crowd that gathered for the meeting called by MASSOB.
Policemen from Owerri last weekend raided the headquarters
of the movement as part of efforts to ensure that populace do not identify with
an unlawful organisation.
This raid is coming two months after a similar raid by the
state security services.
Nwabuwa confirmed the raid, saying MASSOB is a dissident
group interested in dismembering the country and that the group’s
unlawful activities would not be allowed to continue.
He said the gathering was illegal and that the assemblage
of the so-called members was an affront, considering the efforts so far made to
explain the situation to the people.
The police officer said the raid was successful and that
the officers drafted for the action did not engage in any shooting nor did they
make any arrest.
A MASSOB member, Chief Metu Oke, said the whereabouts of
Uwazuruike is still unknown and that the police fired several shots to disperse
members.
Oke could not confirm if arrests were made, saying many of
their members were yet to be accounted for and efforts are still on the find
out if their leaders was in police net or escaped during the pandemonium.
