Imo State Governor Achike Udenwa at the weekend in Abuja
donated N2 million to the Imo State Welfare Association (ISWA), an umbrella
body of the state indigenes resident in the Federal Capital Territory.
At the Imo Day and inauguration of the association’s
new executive at the Millennium Park, Abuja, Udenwa said the donation is to
encourage the ISWA’s micro-credit loan scheme.
The new president, Bennie Nwabue, said the scheme is targeted
at the less privileged members.
Udenwa, who was in company of his deputy, Ebere Udenagu,
urged Imo indigenes in the Diaspora to be their brother’s keeper always.
The governor also urged them to assist the state from time
to time the bringing back some of their earnings to invest it there.
ISWA president said the micro-credit loan scheme is the
principal project of the association, adding that it is “aimed at
economic empowerment of the recipients, which is in line with the poverty
alleviation programme of the federal and state governments.”
He added that beneficiaries of the scheme must be registered
members of the town and zonal unions in the FCT, advising that those that wish
to benefit “must be recommended and guaranteed by their town and or zonal
union while the application forms must be countersigned by a legislator
representing the constituency of the beneficiary at the National
Assembly.”
He said the association would soon embark on the building of
a befitting civic centre in the FCT.
Nwabue appealed to the FCT Minister, Nasir el-Rufai, to give
consideration to the association’s application for land. “This
civic centre will be a home and rallying place for Imo indigenes in the
FCT”, said he.
Some dignitaries at the event were the former Senate
President, Anyim Pius Anyim, the Eze Igbo Abuja, Ibe Nwosu.
