NANS urges Nigerians to invest in varsities

By Chukwudi Achife

Bureau Chief, Enugu

The National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) has urged wealthy Nigerians to invest their money in efforts to save the nation’s education system from imminent collapse.

Coordinator of NANS Zone B, Mr. Ohazuruike Tochukwu, made the appeal at a news briefing in Enugu, saying the state of universities called for concerted efforts to salvage them especially when government has shown that it could not bear the burden alone.

Tochukwu said the paucity of funds was impacting negatively on the universities resulting in increases in fees because the Federal Government has directed that vice-chancellors must generate 25 per cent of their funds before they could get the balance of 75 per cent from government.

"There are people who have money. They should come and invest it in our institutions," saying many university departments have lost their accreditation due to lack of basic facilities.

The NANS leader said the new eight-man executive elected at the NANS Zone B convention held in Warri, Delta State between December 3 and 5 would provide purposeful leadership for students within the nine South East and South South states comprising the zone.

He said the new leadership has set in motion machinery to seek justice for all politically victimised students as well as see to the reopening of closed down institutions notably Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike and Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Unwana.
