NAFDAC to replace manufacturers’ certificates in 2005

By Onyekachi Eze

Senior Reporter, Abuja

To ensure a fool-proof hologram to check the faking of its numbers, the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) would withdraw all registration certificates issued to manufacturers of drugs, cosmetics and beverages from January and replace them with new ones at no cost to the manufacturers.

NAFDAC Director-General Dora Akunyili said at a workshop on salt iodisation in Lagos that the agency was worried that people were faking NAFDAC registration numbers to flood the markets with fake and unregistered products.

Akunyili said the new hologram is produced in the United Kingdom and would be delivered on December 22. She added that the agency decided to adopt administrative procedures to handle cases of fake drugs since drug counterfeiting laws are weak.

On the issue of drug marts, Akunyili said it was her intention to create zonal drug distribution centres for proper regulation of fake and counterfeit drugs but that some pharmacists were frustrating her efforts even when the National Assembly agreed to vote N800 million for the project.

“I was frustrated to drop the idea. I was tired of the fight since the pharmacists did not like it. The major stakeholders are against it so we dropped the idea”, Akunyili said, adding that in spite of this the agency was able to reduce the circulation of fake drugs in the country from 70 to 20 per cent.

She said now that most pharmacists want the drug mart to be established, there was no fund to execute it and the agency has lost interest.
