FG approves N500m micro-credit scheme for traders

By Don Bassey

Correspondent, Abuja

A N555million lifeline has come the way of the National Traders and Market Leaders Council of Nigeria (NTMLCN) as micro-credit facilities for disbursement to its members across the country just as the body announced the sacking of its national executive committee.

The loan, granted to the Council by the Federal Government, will however be accessed in the first quarter of 2005.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) President of the Council, Mohammed Labaran, who disclosed this to newsmen in Abuja at the weekend during its National Conference, also announced the setting up of a six-member Caretaker Committee to oversee the activities of the Council for the next year. Labaran commended the Federal Government for the grant and promised the judicious utilisation of the funds.

On the inauguration of the Committee, headed by the Advisory Council, Lagos State Chapter, Adenike Lawal, Labaran said the swearing in followed the dissolution of the former Executive Council led by Adetutu Odunsi.

A communiqué issued at the end of the conference and signed by delegates from the 27 states in attendance read in parts: “The conference resolved that Adetutu Odunsi henceforth ceases to be the president of the Association due to various atrocities perpetrated by her while in office including embezzlement of the Association’s fund, abuse of office and gross mismanagement of the Association’s resources. That all documents belonging to the Association be released to the General Secretary without further delay and that Adetutu should henceforth stop parading herself as President of the Association”.
