Efforts to bring to an end the on-going cold war between deputy senate president Ibrahim Mantu and Governor Joshua Dariye of Plateau State received a boost yesterday as a reconciliatory meeting was called at the instance of a prominent traditional ruler in the state, the Gong Gomai of Shendam; Mubert Shaldas, both Mantu and governor Dariye were at the meeting.
Since the crisis in the state which culminated into the imposition of emergency rule on the Plateau, Senator Mantu and governor Dariye began to accuse each other of one thing or the other.
Only last week the two traded accusations over an alleged plot to burn down some strategic public buildings in the state and mobilise for protests against government policies.
While the governor had accused Mantu of being behind the plot, Mantu had described the accusation as cheap blackmail.
Perhaps it was in realisation of the negative impact which the sour relationship between Mantu and Dariye may continue to have on the state in general that the traditional ruler decided to convene the meeting to check the situation.
The meeting which was behind closed doors lasted for about three hours.
Though the outcome of the meeting was not disclosed to journalists, sources told our correspondent that the two parties have agreed to tell their supporters to Sheath their daggers.
According to sources, the parties agreed to work for the peace of Plateau and the collective good of the state.
At the end of the meeting, Senator Mantu and Gov. Dariye went into Mantu’s car marked “Deputy Senate president of the federal republic of Nigeria.”
They drove straight to Mantu’s sister’s house to pay a visit to her from where they departed.
Also in attendance at the meeting were other traditional rulers including Gbong Giwom Jos, Dr. Victor Pam, the Ponzhi Taroh, and Dagwan River.
