Shell confirms oil spillage at Egbeda
From Bright Ewulu,in Lagos

Shell Petroleum Development Corporation (SPDC) has confirmed oil spill along the 18-inch Assa-Rumuekpe Pipelines at Egbeda community in Rivers state, saying that since the incident efforts by its officials to repair the leak points have been frustrated by community militants.
Shell’s head of corporate external affairs, Mr Don Boham explained in a release that because the SPDC has been prevented from carrying out the normal joint investigation visit, it was unable to determine the cause of the spillage and the volume of the spill.
Shell, it would be recalled, recently maintained its unpreparedness to comply with the Senate’s order that it should pay the sum of N1.5 billion as at compensation to Ijaw Aborigenes, saying that the issues at stake can only be handled by a court of law.
The compensation, according to the Senate is to assuage the Ijaws for damages allegedly caused by oil spillage in their land.
The SPDC’s refusal to obey the senate’s directive, according to Senator John Brambaifa, chairman, Senate Committee on Compliance on Senate Resolutions, amounts to an affront to the highest legislative body in the land.
On the oil spillages at Egbeda, Rivers state, Boham said that “while efforts to secure access to the spill site were on-going, some unknown persons set fire to two leak points while the spill containment contractor SPDC despatched to site was denied access and chased away by the youths.
“The militants have also seized two SPDC vehicles, one of the seizures occurred while Emohua local council chairman and civil service commissioner were trying to mediate in the crisis,” he stated.
On the compensation matter, the SPDC stressed that it is a responsible corporate citizen, and that it will always act in responsible manners and comply with directives from the appropriate regulatory bodies in its area of business.
It further explained its belief that the matter on hand will be resolved through dialogue or by court adjudication.
