Wabara tasks governors on growth of rural areas
From Simeon Nwakaudu, Makurdi
SENATE President, Adolphus Wabara, has advised state governors to be in touch with the grassroots to impact positively on the lives of the people.
Wabara, who spoke at the weekend during the conferment of the chieftaincy title of Zege Gbenda U Tiv on Edo State governor, Lucky Igbinedion, noted that such link with the people is necessary for rapid growth of the nation.
According to him, the country is witnessing stunted development at the state and local council levels because some governors have lost touch with those whose mandate they hold in trust.
The Senate President, however, singled out Igbinedion whom he described as one of those that have consistently considered the grassroots as one of their principal catchment areas.
He advised other governors to emulate Igbinedion.
In his remarks, Igbinedion pledged to continue working for the unity of the nation, saying that the chieftaincy title will strengthen his resolve to better the lives of Nigerians.
His words: "I am flattered by this title and the responsibility it has placed on me. I will endeavour to live up to the expectations of the Tiv nation".
Igbinedion urged traditional institutions across the nation to use their positions to foster national peace, which will translate to development.
Earlier, the Tor Tiv, Dr. Akewe Torbula, declared that the Tiv nation would continue to pursue a united Nigeria, saying that the title conferred on Igbinedion was aimed at building bridges across the nation.
Benue State Governor George Akume commended his Edo State counterpart for identifying with the Tiv nation.
The chieftaincy title: Zege Gbenda U Tiv conferred on Igbinedion means the express road of Tiv people. The occasion attracted dignitaries from all walks of life.
