Is President Olusegun Obasanjo's proposed National Dialogue the way forward for Nigeria?
‘Economic Reforms Not to Punish Nigerians’

President Olusegun Obasanjo has declared that all the economic reforms of his administration were not to make life unbearable for the Nigerians but to enhance the socio-well-being of the citizenry. Obasanjo who spoke against the backdrop of the critics of his government at the 13th Owu National Convention in Owu-Kuta, a town in Ayedire Local Government Council area of Osun State, Saturday ,said no matter the critics of his government, he would not discontinue the pursuit of the economic reforms. According to him, "The yearnings and aspirations of the common man have become guiding principles in his determination of making life bearable to Nigerians and not to compound their woes." He said, "we are not discouraged. When we start doing good work, virtually, people will react against our decisions whether they like them or not, then, we won't turn back. Truth will always prevail." Obasanjo who is also Balogun of Owu remarked that, "It is typical of our indigene that the blood to do good always flows in your vein , we are not selfish and we are always on the side of truth, justice and fairplay. While stating further that his government was determined to make life meaningful and make the citizens proud of their country, but urged them not to resist the changes his government was putting in place for selfish proposes. He said that, "All what we have been doing were in the interest of all Nigerians and future generations yet unborn." Obasanjo commended all the 38-own communities in the South-West states and the Republic of Benin for their unity and their will to help each other. He called on other communities in the country to emulate Owu people by embarking on self-help projects and convinced the government that, "we are capable of assisting and complimenting the government efforts in all its three tiers of government. President Obasanjo also used the occasion to commend Governor Oyinlola of Osun State for embarking on meaningful projects since assumption of office. In his own speech at the meeting, the National President of National Council of Owu People, Chief Doja Adewolu stated that the Owu National Convention was started in the 80s by late High Chief Akin Olugbade and reviewed in 1992 by President Olusegun Obasanjo in order to enhance unity among Owu people. Also speaking, the Osun State Governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola urged Nigerians to support President Obasanjo on his efforts to enhance the socio-well-being of the citizenry. He then appealed to other communities to emulate the Owu people so as to move the nation forward.
