Maitama Sule Raises Alarm over Northern Disunity

An Northern elder stateman, Alhaji Maitama Sule, has said the north was again under threat politically reminiscent of its experience in 1949. Sule, who raised the alarm in Lokoja weekend during his keynote address at a civic reception organised in honour of Chairman, National Executive Council Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Chief Sunday Awoniyi, said this same threat prompted the establishment of defunct Northern Peoples Congress (NPC) which was a unifying body for all the northerners then. "Today, we are facing a similar threat, therefore we need unity in the country and we have to start from known to the unknown," he noted. Sule, who preached peace and one Nigeria, urged Nigerians to come together and build a united nation. He observed that for the north not to be in disarray they need to accept Awoniyi as National Chairman of Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF). The Dan Masanmi of Kano observed that although Awoniyi belonged to a minority tribe in the old north but worked with practically all the other tribes in the big task of the building the foundations of unity in the north which led to the final building of the structure of the Nigeria federation. He called on the northerners to support ACF under a northern Christians for the greater unity of the north. Sule, who appealed for peace and unity of the country to enhance development, cautioned northerners on the need to come together and work for the development of one nation. Also, speaking at the occasion, the reception Chairman and former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, showered encomiums on Awoniyi and expressed confidence in his ability to succeed as chairman of ACF.
