Election Tribunal Building Torched
From Charles Onyekamuo in Awka, 12.13.2004
Awka High Court 1, building, the venue of Anambra State Gove-rnorship/National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal was Saturday torched by unknown persons. On getting the information around 10 am, yesterday THISDAY raced to the court premises to confirm the incident. Partly torched was the office of the secretary to the tribunal, Mrs. Juliana Fash, with the doors to the office and that of her Assistant burnt. Also torched was the office of the Assistant chief Registrar of the Court. Some of the motion papers in Fash's office, the windows blinds, cushions and ceilings were burnt. Fash said she could not fathom the source of the fire. " My friend, as you see am, na so I see am this monrning -oo", she told ThisDay. But she was busy retriving some documents from the office which she packed into some "Ghana Must Go" bags for evacuation. But a security guard, Mr. Francis Onuorah who claimed to be aware with his other colleague when the fire started said it was simply mysterious. Although he could not say the exact time at night when it started, but was quick to point out that it could be well over midnight and said that as they were sitting in front of the court building, what they heard was a ball of fire that landed on the staircase behind them and splashed with a canon-like sound fire all over the entire balcony and unto the ceiling igniting fire immediately. The fire, he said spread quickly to the office of the secretary to the tribunal via an electrical wire ignited in the course of the explosion from the mystery fire. "Honestly, I can't say from where the fire came. We only saw a ball of fire on the stair case exploding and spreading fire all over the place. We didn't see who threw the fire. "But immediately, we swung into action, shouting and called on the policemen at the Central Police Station about 50 metres away to come and help. What actually saved the situation was that we had some water in the drums. So, when the policemen came, all of us rose to the occasion, pouring water on the fire until it was eventually put-out", he said.
