Governor Abdulkadir Kure of Niger State has appealed to the Federal Government to provide adequate funds to all tertiary health institutions in the country and rescue it from incessant industrial unrest. Kure, represented by his deputy Dr Shem Zagbayi-Nuhu at the opening ceremony of the 52nd meeting of the Committee of Chief Executives of Federal Tertiary Hospitals at the Federal Medical Centre, Bida, said a situation where chief executives of hospitals are over-burdened with managing industrial crises occasioned by shortfall in allocations was unnecessary and should be avoided. Apparently referring to the on going strike that has crippled Federal Government owned tertiary, health institutions, he called on government to look into the issue of underfunding and shortfall in allocation to these hospitals. He noted that shortfall in allocationhas made the hospital to abdicate its primary responsibility of saving live due to incessant strike by its work force. He appealed to industrial unions and associations in the sector to show understanding and restraint with their chief executives, assuring workers that a collective effort is being made to address funding and other related issues that affect the sector. Advising the health workers, Kure said, "as people offering very important services, health care providers should see themselves as privileged apostles, who will be rewarded even hereafter." The Etsu Nupe and Chairman of the Niger State Traditional Council, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, called for adequate funding of the tertiary institutions, in view of the vital role the sector plays. He said, aside adequate funding, allocations to these hospitals and health sector in general should be released promptly, saying, "it is when funds are released accordingly and as when due that our hospitals and health providers can deliver the dividends of democracy to the people." Earlier, the chairman of the committee, Dr S. O. Dawodu said that the executive of the committee met with President Olusegun Obasanjo, last Tuesday, where they extracted a word of promise that funds will be released soon to enable them offset all arrears and meet other sundry expenses.
