KOGI
Forum of Local Government Chairmen in Kogi State at the weekend raised alarm that members of the state House of Assembly were treading the dangerous path of anarchy by abdicating their primary role of law-making. The Assembly was accused of becoming an institution of political blackmail, intimidation, vendetta and harassment. The forum's Chairman, Hon. Gabriel Agoyi, told newsmen at the weekend that the purported suspension of Ibaji Local Government area Chairman, Hon. Emmanuel Egwaba, was very shocking. The forum, which condemned the action of the Assembly, stressed that the barbaric act came at a time when there are concerned effort by stakeholders to forge peace and stability in the state. The chairmen recalled the untidy manner the Assembly working on very flimsy, cheap and frivolous exercises, suspended the chairmen of Ogori/Mangongo and Olamoboro Local Government areas at the instigation of the Assembly members from the two local government areas. The chairmen noted that "the dust raised by the suspension of the two local councils has not settled when the Assembly are nursing personal problems with the chairmen by reducing their tenure to two years." They equally noted that the decision to suspend the chairman of Ibaji Local Council showed that there are fifth columnists in the Assembly with Simon Achuba, Deputy Speaker as arrowhead, who was determined to plunge the state into turmoil and anarchy." The chairmen resolved that the suspension order on the chairman was unconstitutional and misuse of legislative power. They however promised to guide jealously their electoral mandate as local government chairmen and refuse to be blackmailed.
