Salary Arrears: Military Pensioners Threaten Strike
From Onwuka Nzeshi in Warri, 12.13.2004

National Association of Military pensioners yesterday warned of an imminent “violent reaction” from the legion of ex-service men nationwide, should the Ministry of Defence and the Military Pensions Board (MPB) fail to pay up the nine month arrears of pension benefits due ex-soldiers before the Christmas holidays. In a strongly worded petition addressed to the National Assembly and the Ministry of Defence, they decried the repeated verification exercise conducted by the Pensions Board and argued that they were exercise in futility, as long as plight of the pensioners are not improved after each exercise. Comrade Benson Ero-mafuru, National President of the Association who endorsed the petition, urged the Minister for Defence, Dr Rabiu Kwankwaso, to end this nightmare of verification, since it had times without number led to the death of many pensioners who are forced to sleep outdoors because those who conduct the exercise have never deemed it fit to provide accommodation. Eromafuru also condemned the arrest, detention and intimidation of members of the National Association of Military Pensioners, warning that such attempt to silence the voice of the disengaged soldiers could further aggravate the problem. He reiterated position of the association on the delay in payment of military pension stipends, alleging that it was a grand conspiracy between those administrating the pension funds, the banks and the defence ministry to decimate the population of retired soldiers, while the conspirators feed fat on the pensions funds. They urged the Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Defence, Honourable Wale Oke, to release the full report of his committee which probed the administration of the military pensions funds culminating in the exposure of scandals, adding that the probe would served no useful purpose if all those found guilty of mismanaging the funds were not brought before the law.
