AD Decampees Are Opportunists -Tinubu
By Adeleke Emmanuel, 12.12.2004
Governor Bola Tinubu of Lagos State has described members of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) in the House of Representatives that decamped from the party to another party as scavengers in the corridors of power. He said "this people stayed in the corridors of the AD, they won election on the credibility of the AD and they betrayed the trust on them". Tinubu said the decampees are irrelevant to the party since it was obvious that the same party they decamped from was the same party that won the seats for them at the House. According to him, "when some of them got their mandate, the party patched them up, polished them and helped them in many ways before getting to the corridor of power". "Now they got to the power and trade the mandate", adding that "their attitude amounted to treachery even as the party constitutionally will still have a way of dealing with them accordingly". On whether there exist division or factionalisation in the party, Tinubu dismissed such, saying such does not exists in the party. “As worthy leaders and worthy ambassadors or worthy representatives, everybody works for the progress of the party, to unite the party, which is our main focus”, he said. He said politics should be seen by Nigerians as nothing but a temporary association. "Alliances, that is what makes politics interesting. You cannot be running away from that, that means you are abandoning the mandate, you are also betraying the mandate, and you are not supposed to do it like that", Tinubu stressed. He, however, foreclosed the possibility of the decampees coming back to the party, but said if the party decides to take them or invite them, he will still accept them. He added that democracy is all about conflict resolution, stating that politics has its own twists and turns, while emphasising that it is important things are looked from the positive angle. He hinted that the state government has concluded plans to bring investment worth $382 billion to the state as a way of making the state more condusive for people to transact their business and willing investors coming in to invest in the state.
