World Bank�s Vice President for African region,
Mr Gobind Nankani, is expected in Nigeria on today for a four-day working
visit.
A statement today from the Bank�s Country
office in Abuja, stated that Nankani would meet with senior government
officials, civil society organisations and the media.
The meeting is to enable the vice president to
exchange ideas on how best the bank will assist in Nigeria�s development
process.
The statement signed by Obadiah Tohomdet, the
Bank�s Country office head of communications and external affairs, said that
the World Bank official would also inspect World Bank assisted projects in
Bauchi, Enugu and Abia States.
Nankani would interact with government
officials, beneficiaries and the business community and pay courtesy visits
on the governors of the three states, Tohomdet said.
He said that Nakani would be accompanied on the
visit by the Bank�s Country Director in Nigeria, Mr Hafez Ghanem and other
Bank officials.
�Mr Nankani�s visit to Nigeria will mark the
beginning of a new era of cooperation between Nigeria and the World Bank.
�An era in which we will work together as
partners to support Nigeria�s effort to create wealth and reduce poverty.��
In the coming months, focus will be on
infrastructural development, education, health and agriculture,�� he quoted
the Bank�s Country Director in Nigeria as saying.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) learnt that
Nankani, who is a Ghanaian national, joined the Bank in 1976 as a young
professional.
In 1977 he was appointed an economist in the
Public Finance Division, Development Economics Department.
After a brief leave of absence in 1981 as
Economic Adviser to the Vice President of Ghana, he later re-joined the
Bank�s West Africa Region.
In 1984, he was transferred to the Nigeria
Division and had worked in various countries under the World Bank.
Nankani attended Harvard University and holds a Ph.D in
Economics.
