DAILY TRIUMPH-EU approves 500m euro for water, sanitation

                                                                                        MONDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2004

EU approves 500m euro for water, sanitation

The European Union (EU) has approved 500 million Euro (about N86 billion) for water projects in Africa, the Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries, including Nigeria.

A statement from the delegation of the European commission to Nigeria, on Friday in Abuja, said that the project was aimed at pursuing the millennium development target to halve the proportion of people without access to safe drinking water by 2015

The project which is known as the ACP-EU Water Facility, is aimed at improving governance in water, sanitation and management of water resources at regional/transponder, national and local levels, it said.

It is also to increase access to safe, affordable and sustainable water and sanitation services for the rural and urban poor through the provision of catalytic funding for infrastructure and services.

In line with the implementation of

the project, the European Commission had launched a call for proposals inviting eligible government and non-government organisations from ACP, including Nigeria to submit their water proposals, it stated.

It pointed out that the submission would facilitate the initial allocation of 180 million Euro which is available under the water facility for this year.

According to the statement, such proposal would be received by January 17, 2005.

The guidelines for the proposals are

available at the web sites of the delegation of the European Commission to Nigeria, it further stated.

World leaders at the world summit for sustainable development (WSSD) in Johannesburg in 2002, set themselves the goal of halving the proportion of people without access to basic sanitation by 2015.
