MONDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2004           Environmental degradation: Kola community stages demonstration From ALIYU LAWAL SAULAWA. P/Harcourt THE people of Kola Community of Rivers state have held a peaceful demonstration at the premises of Shell Petroleum Development company. Our correspondent reports that the people sat at the premises of the company quitely for over 48 hours. The demonstration which featured predominantly women with their children and some elders of the community was headed by Chief (Dr) Saro of Kola community Kingdom. Also, the demonstration was basically staged to protest over the dilapidated or polluted area the oil company subjected the people to live in without any hope or brighter future for them and their children. The area, which is use for exploration by Shell Petroleum Development Company and Texaco, physically threatens for its inhabitants. The demonstration, however ended following an agreement reached between the oil companies and the people of the community.
