MONDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2004           We will recall Mantu, if... kinsmen Indigenes of Gindiri town in Pyiem Chiefdom of Plateau State have said that they will recall Senanator Ibrahim Mantu from National Assembly if allegations levelled against him turned out to be true. Traditional ruler-elect, (Sum-Pyiem elect) of the chiefdom, Alhaji Ibrahim Manomi, told an Abuja High Court sitting in a libel suit filed by Mantu against The Sun Newspaper. Mantu filed the suit demanding N2 billion damages for defamation and libel over a story by Sunday newspaper on Feb 21, in which the lawmaker was said to have duped a business associate. Manomi, who testified for the plaintiff told the court that Mantu is a prince and that their community has no adverse record of him to doubt his integrity. �Mantu is not somebody of questionable character, he is a royal son and that is why we elected him to represent us��. He said he had known Mantu for 25 years and that the whole community was shocked about the publication. Another witness, Mr Nega Dolitity, the Chief Library Assistant of the National Library, also tendered different editions of the newspaper in evidence. Dolitity said he was subpoenaed to tender the document and the trial judge, Justice Orji Abadua, discharged him temporarily after admitting the document. Justice Abadua adjourned further hearing in the suit till Wednesday.
