NATIONAL NEWS ‘Obey Supreme Court order on Lagos councils funds’ By WALE AKINOLA Sunday, December 12, 2004 THE Federal Government has been called upon to immediately abide by last Friday’s judgement of the Supreme Court and release the seized local government statutory allocation due to Lagos State. Reacting to the judgement in Lagos yesterday, the Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly, Honourable Jokotola Pelumi, said “respect for court decisions, especially the apex court of the land is the only way to uphold the constitution and guarantee the survival of democracy in Nigeria.” “The eyes of the whole world are no doubt on Mr. President who, as a statesman and professed democrat, will be expected to demonstrate his respect for the Rule of Law by obeying the Supreme Court and thereby strengthening the country’s democratic process,” Pelumi stated. The Speaker condemned the attempt by the Lagos State chapter of the PDP to deliberately trivialise and pervert the judgement by calling for fresh local government elections in the state. Said he: “This call for fresh elections is entirely in the imagination of the PDP. Nowhere in the judgement did the Supreme Court invalidate either the law establishing the local government councils or the elections into them on March 27, 2004.
