Dariye's travails: Hold Caliphate responsible — CAN

By EMEKA MAMAH, Kaduna
Sunday, December 12, 2004

CHRISTIAN Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 northern states says that the Sokoto caliphate is responsible for the current travails of the Plateau State governor, Chief Joshua Dariye.

CAN said that the Caliphate was plotting the downfall of Dariye because of his involvement in the struggle for the emancipation of the Middle Belt region from the hegemony of the northern oligarchy. It also questioned the trial of the governor for alleged corruption at the Federal High Court, Kaduna instead of Jos, Plateau State or Abuja where there are similar courts of competent jurisdiction.

Secretary general of CAN, Elder Saidu Dogo,  who made this known at a news conference in Kaduna yesterday said that statements from the MuslimUlammas had made CAN to believe that Dariye was being punished for championing the cause of the Middle Belt people and wondered  why the Federal Government was being used by the north to remove Dariye from office on the so-called issue of corruption even as other governors who were more corrupt were allowed to enjoy their freedom.

”Honestly, we believe that the Caliphate is interested in making sure that Plateau State is destroyed . This particular body (CAN) does not condone corruption and we believe that anything that should be done to stop corruption would be done. But when there is selective treatment, it becomes nonsense,” Dogo said.

He pointed out that all those whose cases were before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) should be charged to court to show that the Federal Government was serious about fighting corruption instead of allowing the caliphate to use it for selfish reasons.
