Varsities produce graduates unsuitable to nation’s needs — Obasanjo

DAYO JOHNSON, Akure
Sunday, December 12, 2004

PRESIDENT Olusegun Obasanjo at the weekend in Akure identified the production of graduates that lack relevance to the needs of the society as a major problem confronting the nation's universities.
Speaking at the 15th and 16th convocations of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), the president said the issue was worrisome to government. He said that “it is time for our universities like their counterparts in developed countries to look inward in assessing the relevance of their programmes vis-a-vis the needs of the nation.

According to him, one of the banes of our society today are the graduate who are plying our streets looking for jobs when in fact three are jobs which they can create”. Obasanjo who was represented by the executive director of the National Universities Commission (NUC) Professor Peter Okebukola, however, noted that the commission was ready to give university curriculum an entrepreneurial slant. He said the Federal Government was looking forward to the implementation of each curriculum so that Nigerian graduates can respond to the reform agenda of government.

Speaking on cultism on campuses, the President declared: “Enough is enough, universities as ivory towers must be dynamic in snuffing out this wild menace. Government in its determination to ensure an enduring socio-political environment where peace and justice reign will continue to support the institution of higher learning to deal with the nefarious groups.

The vice-chancellor of FUTA, Professor Peter Adeniyi, said that the institution had contributed largely to the skilled and professional manpower development of the country as over 7,000 highly qualified technologically oriented graduates had passed out of the institution.
