Don asks FG to watch IMF, World Bank induced reforms

By Victor Ahiuma-Young and Margaret Odeyemi
Monday, December 13, 2004

LAGOS—A UNIVERSITY lecturer, Dr. Funmi Adewumi, has warned that unless the Federal Government retraces its steps from alleged World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) induced economic reform programmes, the nation will sink deeper into unimaginable level of socio-economic woes that could trigger off unpredictable socio-political crisis.

Dr Adewunmi who teaches at the Department of Industrial Relations and Personnel Management, University of Lagos, argued that like the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP), the reform programmes of the government had only worsened the living conditions of most Nigerians and had only succeeded in aggravating the existing inequalities between the rich and the poor in the country.

Delivering a paper on "Prospects and Challenges of Trade Union Unity in Nigeria," weekend in Lagos, at the Kolagbodi Memorial Foundation (KMF) 8th Annual Memorial Lecture, she lamented that after five years of the so-called reforms, Nigerians were still being asked to be patient.

According to him: "The process of globalisation is accompanied by restrictions and inequalities, which in turn, have created tensions and social upheavals, thereby threatening industrial peace and harmony.

In fact, like the preceding programmes of SAP imposed on many countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, globalisation has continued to aggravate the existing inequalities and inequities not only between countries of the developed world and developing world, but more painfully within national economies of the developing countries.
