Obasanjo reassures military of funding

By Kingsley Omonobi
Monday, December 13, 2004

KADUNA —AGAINST the backdrop of drastic drop in the financial allocation to the Nigerian military by the Federal Government, President Olusegun Obasanjo has warned officers and men of the Armed Forces to disregard insinuations that his administr ation lacked the political will to adequately fund their activities.

"You should be aware that what is made available to you is only negatively impacted by cash flow constraints and not political will on the part of government."

The president who was represented by Defence Minister, Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso at the passing out parade of officers of Direct Short Service Course 15 of the Nigeria Defence Academy in Kaduna at the weekend, assured the members of the Armed Forces that the provision of training, operational and welfare facilities would continue to be vigorously pursued.

"In any case, discipline and loyalty are the critical requirements of an effective fighting force. Your conduct must continue to be guided by this dictum."

Disclosing that a large portion of the problems facing the society today including the military were caused by misadministration, Obasanjo said his administration was doing everything to get us out of the woods.

"In Nigeria, the mismanagement and misadministration of the past requires a fundamental review of government policy and a new approach to national development. Inevitably, this will entail short-term discomfort necessary for our nation’s renewal in the long term."

While appealing for continued patience and understanding of all Nigerians in this regard, the president said, "already, some of the reform policies we have taken, have started to bear fruits that would benefit us in the long run."
