ONITSHA — ONITSHA South Local Government is to spend about N200,000 to equip the ultra modern press centre complex built for practising journalists in Onitsha. The council Chairman, Chief Basil Ejidike said the decision to equip the Dr. Chris Ngige Press Centre built by the local government at the cost of about N1 million with communication gadgets was to assist journalists in Onitsha and visiting journalists to carry out their duties effectively.
Ejidike made this known during the year 2004 NUJ Award Ceremony to mark the end of the union’s press week held at Marble Hotel. According to him, the gesture was based on the realisation of the importance of the press in the overall growth and development of any dynamic society.
"As a leader and administrator, I appreciate the noble role of your profession in educating, enlightening and dissemination of information to the members of the public. Isolate the press from the people, the result will be confusion, anarchy, ignorance, retrogression and total disorganisation at every level," he said.
The council boss, who was honoured by the state council of NUJ, Anambra State Chapter with award of Excellence on Public Administration, further disclosed that the local government had assisted four journalists from Anambra State to attend the last International Olympic Games. Apart from that, Ejidike, who made a donation of N25,000 each on behalf of his family and the council said he had donated two new ceiling fans to the state secretariat of the NUJ.
He urged the present state executive of the NUJ to redouble its efforts in ensuring that journalists carried out their duties without biases by reporting events in the state correctly. He called on wealthy individuals and corporate organisations to assist the NUJ in providing conducive atmosphere for journalists to perform their professional duties and promised to continue to assist the union in all its activities and programmes.
