Ekwueme, others eulogise Nwankiti

Vice-President, Dr. Alex Ekwueme and other prominent Nigerians have eulogised
the late Rev. (Dr.) Benjamin Nwankiti whose remains will be buried in Owerri,
Imo State today.
The deceased was Bishop of Owerri Diocese
of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion for many years before he was
elevated Archbishop of the church’s Province II.
Dr. Nwankiti retired in 1998 and died on
November 24 at 76.
Besides Dr. Ekwueme, eminent citizens who
called at Dr. Nwankiti’s Owerri residence include the wife of the first civilian
governor of old Imo State, Lady Victoria Mbakwe, High Court judge, Justice
Chioma Nwosu-Iheme, Nwankiti’s biographer, Prof. Ernest Emenyonu, and so many
others.
Dr. Ekwueme, who called at the family
residence on Sunday, noted in his remarks in the condolence register that the
late Nwankiti served his Lord faithfully and prayed for the repose of his soul.
"Our Most Rev. Father in God, Adieu and
rest in the bosom of our Lord whom you served so faithfully and so long," he
said.
Lady Mbakwe, on her part, lamented that
the late Nwankiti will always be missed by the Mbakwe family and also prayed for
his soul to rest in peace.
"My beloved lord, you will always be
missed by Mbakwe family. Thank you for what you were for us. May your gentle
soul rest in perfect peace," she stated.
Prof. Emenyonu, who wrote extensively on
the life and times of the late Dr. Nwankiti, in his book titled A Good
Shepherd, stated, in his own remarks, that the cleric left indelible and
unassailable footprints on the sands of time.
"You have every reason therefore to go
with dignity and in peace," the former Provost of Alvan Ikoku College of
Education (AICE), Owerri added.
Remains of the late Archbishop will lie in
state in his country home at Atta Ikeduru, between 8.00 am and 10.00 am today
before departing for the Cathedral Church of Transfiguration of Our Lord, Owerri,
where it will be finally buried after a church service.
The late Dr. Nwankiti, noted for his
massive contributions to the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) was survived
by his wife, Jane, two sons, Obiora and Udoka, and a daughter, Mrs. Mary Abara,
with host of relations.
Thousands of Christians from different
parts of the world are expected to grace the burial of the reverred cleric.
