    Ekwueme, others eulogise Nwankiti

    EMMA OGU, Owerri

FORMER Vice-President, Dr. Alex Ekwueme and other prominent Nigerians have eulogised the late Rev. (Dr.) Benjamin Nwankiti whose remains will be buried in Owerri, Imo State today.

The deceased was Bishop of Owerri Diocese of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion for many years before he was elevated Archbishop of the church’s Province II.

Dr. Nwankiti retired in 1998 and died on November 24 at 76.

Besides Dr. Ekwueme, eminent citizens who called at Dr. Nwankiti’s Owerri residence include the wife of the first civilian governor of old Imo State, Lady Victoria Mbakwe, High Court judge, Justice Chioma Nwosu-Iheme, Nwankiti’s biographer, Prof. Ernest Emenyonu, and so many others.

Dr. Ekwueme, who called at the family residence on Sunday, noted in his remarks in the condolence register that the late Nwankiti served his Lord faithfully and prayed for the repose of his soul.

"Our Most Rev. Father in God, Adieu and rest in the bosom of our Lord whom you served so faithfully and so long," he said.

Lady Mbakwe, on her part, lamented that the late Nwankiti will always be missed by the Mbakwe family and also prayed for his soul to rest in peace.

"My beloved lord, you will always be missed by Mbakwe family. Thank you for what you were for us. May your gentle soul rest in perfect peace," she stated.

Prof. Emenyonu, who wrote extensively on the life and times of the late Dr. Nwankiti, in his book titled A Good Shepherd, stated, in his own remarks, that the cleric left indelible and unassailable footprints on the sands of time.

"You have every reason therefore to go with dignity and in peace," the former Provost of Alvan Ikoku College of Education (AICE), Owerri added.

Remains of the late Archbishop will lie in state in his country home at Atta Ikeduru, between 8.00 am and 10.00 am today before departing for the Cathedral Church of Transfiguration of Our Lord, Owerri, where it will be finally buried after a church service.

The late Dr. Nwankiti, noted for his massive contributions to the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) was survived by his wife, Jane, two sons, Obiora and Udoka, and a daughter, Mrs. Mary Abara, with host of relations.

Thousands of Christians from different parts of the world are expected to grace the burial of the reverred cleric.
