Mourners among 20 drowned in boat mishap

    SEGUN JAMES, Warri

SEVERAL mourners head-ing for a burial party in Escravos, near Warri, Delta State, were among 20 persons feared killed when two passenger boats collided close to Jones Creek Island on the Warri River, Saturday.

Some of the dead passengers, reports said, were market women carrying containers of native gin (ogogoro) and children. Many others sustained injuries.

Police in Warri said they are investigating the crash.

Sources said one of the boats, a locally made wooden vessel (popularly called Kpekpekpe in the area) and used for conveying traders and goods to urban areas in the Niger Delta, was on its way to Warri when it collided with a speed boat heading for Escravos.

Daily Champion learnt that both boats were moving without any lights on when they crashed about 8.00pm.

Over 30 persons were on the Kpekpekpe as at the time of the crash.

The speed boat was also overloaded with passengers for Escravos.

Daily Champion gathered that a boat belonging to Ijaw Operators, who had mobilised their colleagues, was used to rescue the injured immediately after the accident.

According to a police source, at the marine Police station, Old Port, Warri, because of the restive nature of people of the riverine area, the police only go there when they are invited adding that no report of the incident was made to them by the people of the area.

Police Area Commander for Delta South, with zonal headquarters in Warri, Mr. Joseph Abiona said he has not received any report as at press time on the crash but he would investigate the claim immediately.
