ACF will not pick president —Awoniyi

    TIMOTHY AJIBOYE, Lokoja

AREWA Consultative Forum (ACF) said it is not part of its duty to pick whoever becomes the country’s president in 2007.

Chairman of ACF, Chief Sunday Awoniyi restated at a civic reception held in his honour by the body in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, that the Forum is politically non-partisan.

According to him, "ACF is not in the business of producing the president of the federation, the governor of a state or the chairman of a local government or the councillor of a ward."

"It is the responsibility of each political party to field candidates for elective offices without any interference from ACF," Chief Awoniyi disclosed.

He explained that many ACF members belong to different political parties in which they hold high offices, remarking also that several other member belong to no political parties at all.

"Once ACF begins to poke its nose into the electoral affairs of political parties, it will be destroyed, it will not survive our Nigerian kind of politics," he stated.

Chief Awoniyi said ACF’s business is to heal and encourage constructively, political leaders and office holders at the local, state and federal levels to pursue policies and programmes consistent with long term benefits to the people and the survival and development of the nation.

"We (ACF) shall continue to commend and encourage our executives at various levels when they perform well for the benefit of the common man," he said.

Similarly, Chief Awoniyi said the Forum shall continue to point out constructively and knowledgeably actions or policies that negate good governance and the interest of the people.
