Military shops for N22bn to pay ex-servicemen

    ABIODUN ADELAJA, Abuja

Military authorities are shopping for a whopping N22 billion to offset pensions liability of about 15,000 ex-servicemen who were discharged on medical grounds.

The 15,000 military personnel who were retired on medical grounds are yet to receive any form of retirement benefit several months after they were laid off.

Chairman of Military Pensions Board (MPB) Group Captain Adamu Kachiro who disclosed this at the ministerial press briefing on the 2005 Armed Forces and Remembrance Day Celebration said the amount will cover five years, cumulative pension of the ex-servicemen.

According to Kachiro, on payment of the bulk sum, this category of ex-servicemen will be deemed to have been "paid off" and would no longer be entitled to monthly pensions.

He said that the amount has been built into the 2005 budget adding that its approval would put to rest the controversy over the fate of the medically unfit ex-soldiers.

Earlier defence minister, Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso said about N2.2 billion is required for monthly pensions of ex-servicemen in the country.

He said so far, the pensioners are owed about N15.6 billion covering seven months arrears.

Efforts, the minister said, is being intensified to ensure payment of the outstanding pensions liabilities.

Meanwhile Engr. Kwankwaso yesterday flagged off activities lined up for the 2005 armed forces day and remembrance celebration.

According to the programme of events, president Olusegun Obasanjo will on Friday launch the commemorative emblem while an inter-denominational church service is billed for ECWA, Wuse Abuja, on Sunday.

Similarly, a special jumat service will hold at the National Mosque on January 14, 2005 while the wreath laying ceremony will be performed at the National Arcade.
