Obasanjo tasks private sector on rural development

By Chesa Chesa,

State House correspondent, Abuja

President Olusegun Obasanjo has asked members of the organised private sector (OPS) to emulate the Tulsi Chanrai foundations example of public/private sector partnership in the provision of facilities in the countrys rural areas.

The President was speaking at a briefing by the foundation about its activities in Nigeria at the State House on Tuesday where he urged the private sector to collaborate with states and local governments to provide development support while the Federal Governments duty would be to facilitate the co-operation.

President Obasanjo said he was impressed by the voluntary nature of the partnership which has been targeted at the areas of highest need and can be felt and appreciated by the recipients, adding that, your decision to involve local communities will also help to sustain the projects.

The President assured the Tulsi Chanrai Foundation that government would facilitate their activities for the benefit of Nigerians.

Earlier, Foundation Trustee, Mr. J. Chanrai had told the President that the Chanrai family has benefited immensely from many years of economic activity in Nigeria and it was time to put back something into the community, adding that they had six ongoing projects in Kaduna, Kebbi, Oyo, Osun, Lagos and Cross River States.

The projects are in rural primary healthcare, preventive eye care and rural water supply.

He said they were operating two eye hospitals already in Kebbi and Cross River States and had trained local staff as well as inculcating a culture of maintenance in the rural communities where over 1,000 hand pumps were being maintained in collaboration with state and local governments.

Governors Donald Duke and Adamu Aliero of Cross River and Kebbi States respectively, were at the briefing to confirm that Tulsi Chanrai Foundation was already having a positive impact on local communities in their states.
