Varsities abandoned projects to be completed by 2007, says Osuji

By Chinwendu Nnadozie

Special Correspondent,  Minna

Completion of all abandoned projects for the past 20 years in tertiary institutions across the country will be the focus of the Federal Government in the next two years as all capital grants for the execution of such projects in Nigerian Universities will be fully accessed before the end of  the 2004 fiscal year.

The Minister of Education, Professor Fabian Osuji disclosed this in an interview  last weekend shortly after the end of the 51st session of the National Council on Education (NCE)  which took place at the U.K. Bello Arts Theatre  in Minna, Niger State.

Osuji said the Federal Government has spent N94 billion of the 2004 budget on education which is 10.4 per cent of the total budget, but the sum he said,  was not enough to meet the total required sum needed to put the sector on a sound footing.

He blamed the dearth of infrastructure in universities across the country on the level of abandonment by past administrations, and that, according to him, has adversely  effected both academic and infrastructural development  in Nigerian Universities.

He said in 2005, basic income for the ministry will be geared towards the completion of abandoned projects littering higher institutions of learning in the past twenty years.

Due to the enormous structures yet completed in tertiary institutions across the country, including physical structures, Osuji said it will take the Federal Government almost till the end of the dispensation to give Nigerian Universities the outlook they deserve and make them comparable to those in other parts of the world.
