Union faults FGs policy on tourism

By Chinwendu Nnadozie

Special Correspondent, Minna

The Federal Government has been called upon to be more realistic in the clamour for investments in the tourism sector of the economy.

The National Union of Hotels and Personal Services Workers of Nigeria expressed displeasure that government did not involve its members in the Nigerian Tourism Board considering their role in the sector.

At the national executive council meeting of the union at Shiroro Hotel, Minna, Niger State the President, Mike Osuebi, spoke of the professional hazards faced by members in the discharge of their duties.

He said despite the greater percentage of participation in the hotel industry by the private sector, government has not encouraged the investors, adding that instead, certain policies of government have stagnated the growth and development of the sector.

He said the union had on several occasions sought audience with the relevant authorities to make government to see reasons why their complaints should be put into consideration, but that such moves yielded no fruit.

Osuebi challenged the government to evolve a policy for the involvement of only professionals in hotel industry, saying that would give members a sense of belonging to contribute their quota to the socio-economic development of Nigeria.

He said so much clamouring is being made about investments in the country and for private participation, yet government has not been disposed to the sector through its policies.
