After a critical review of the
political growth of the country since independence, two university dons on
Tuesday agreed that Nigeria could have been one of the most successful
nations in the world but for the unpatriotic attitude of the ruling elite
that have had their strongholds in all spheres of national life since
1960.
The dons, University of
Colorado Professor of Political Science, Kelechi Kalu and former
President, Academic Staff Union of Universities, Dr. Festus Iyayi, spoke
in Lagos at a lecture organised by the Centre for Constitutionalism and
Demilitarisation.
They said the ruling elite are
opportunists who instead of transforming the nation to an enviable
position by virtue of its numerous endowments are colluding with western
powers to inflicting socio-economic hardships on Nigerians.
In a lecture entitled
Echoes of Instability: Implication for State, Society and Democratic
Consolidation in Nigeria, Iyayi said it was
regrettable that the government now serves as a tool for the actualisation
of a policy of Western globalisation, which he argued is anti-Africa and
an attempt to subvert African economy to the advantage of the West.
He argued that Nigeria is
indirectly being ruled by the Britain, adding that it had connived with
the Nigerian elite to decide who rules the country even to the detriment
of the masses.
On his part, Kelechi said
efforts to build a greater Nigeria are being halted by lack of visionary
leaders, corruption, political sycophancy and extractive leaders, adding
that it was this same elite who are working against the economic fortunes
of Nigeria.
Said he: The central problem
in Nigeria has been the lack of public leadership nurtured by the core
values of a settler elite across the national
landscape.
