Worried at the rate of
involvement of the convoy of governors and top government officials in
accidents, the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) is to introduce an
escort service for them.
Corp Marshal and Chief
Executive of FRSC, Major-General Haladu Hannaniya (rtd), said during a
visit to Enugu State Governor Chimaroke Nnamani that the commission would
provide ambulance and motorcycle outriders that would control the speed of
the convoys and thereby check avoidable accidents on the
highway.
He sought the support of
governors for the success of the scheme and enjoined them to continue to
provide necessary logistic support to the commission, adding that the task
of ensuring safety on the nations highways should not be left to the
commission alone.
Hannaniya called attention to
the severe traffic obstruction and endangering of road users lives by
trailer drivers along the AMA Brewery road at the Ninth Mile Corner and
appealed to Nnamani to help them to acquire a park away from the
road.
He also called for the
relocation of mechanic workshops and markets along the highways in
different parts of the state so as to reduce road congestion and
accidents. He said the decision of the FRSC to site its zonal headquarters
in Enugu was in recognition of the city as a former regional
headquarters.
Nnamani ordered the relocation
of all markets operating along major highways in the state to safer
locations, saying that would reduce vehicular accidents and also reduce
the danger posed to pedestrians and hawkers.
He urged council chairmen and
market authorities to ensure a strict compliance with the order and to
also cooperate with FRSC officers in the discharge of their
duties.
The governor praised the
invaluable contributions of members of the corps to ensuring sanity on
roads, saying Hannaniya is a dedicated officer who has brought a lot of
positive changes and innovations to the
organisation.
