To forestall accidents around the ramp areas of Nigerian airports, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has concluded plans to compel all airlines in the country to send their workers especially drivers to FAAN training school for certification.
The training according to the managing director of FAAN, Engineer Mohammed Gambo Umar, is to reduce the incidents of ramp related accidents involving vehicular movement at the nation’s airports.
Engineer Umar who spoke at a one day seminar titled enhancing ramp safety in our airports that took place in Lagos recently disclosed that nine related RAMP incidents/accidents occurred at airports across the country between November 2002 and December 2003.
Represented by the authority’s general manager fire and safety, Mr. Eze Nwankwo, Umar disclosed that on 28th November, 2002, a Kabo aircraft Boeing 747 with registration number 5N-RRR while maneuvering to taxi out of the apron crashed its left wing against an apron flood light pole, adding that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority immediately grounded the aircraft. The incident occurred at Kaduna airport.
According to the statistics revealed by FAAN managing director, on 14th January 2003, there was also a collision of Falcon airlines B727 with registration number Yu-AKM with African Petroleum Bowser at the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) of Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos.
Also, at the same airport, on 3rd February 2003, a moving National Oil Browser ran into a stationary Bellview Airlines DC-9 aircraft.
On the 7th June, 2003, in the course of repositioning Dasab airlines Boeing 727 aircraft with registration number 5N – BEG without FAAN marshallers on duty, the aircraft’s tail hit the apron floodlight of the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) of Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos.
Also, at the same airport, on 3rd February 2003, a moving National Oil Browser ran into a stationary Bellview Airlines DC-9 aircraft.
