Nigerian sport writers betray sentiment Many Nigerian sports journalists jettisoned their professional principles for patriotism at the final of CAF Champions’ League. True to the belief that sports is the strongest unifying factor in the country, many of the journalists who covered the continental showdown, rested their pens and took to dancing in support of Enyimba FC of Aba. For a moment, some were carried away by Enyimba’s victory and Igbo traditional tunes that rented the air while the champions battled Etoile du Sahel of Tunisia. “I am foremost a Nigerian and tell me why I should not dance, dance and dance when Nigeria is winning?,” a journalist who pleaded anonymity asked. Even when the match became a dingdong affair many journalists still danced and cheered Enyimba along with fans. While they turned the press gallery to supporters’ arena many others were forced to condone the situation by operating amidst chaos and noise. Enyimba, which won the title in 2003 after breaking a 38-year-old jinx, proved their mettle by hitting the North Africans 5-3 in a penalty shootout to retain the cup.
