CNPP faults Reps panel on N16b ecological fund
From Okumephuna Chukwunwike, Abuja
THE recent allegation by the chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Emergency and Disaster, Jerry Ugokwe that the N16 billion ecological fund was used as patronage for some individuals and political parties met a stiff criticism from the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) yesterday.
In a two-page letter by CNPP secretary general, Maxi Okwu to the House Committee chairman, copies of which were made available to the press, refuted the allegation and asked the committee to name the parties and individuals involved in the scam.
"We are irked by the aspect of the statement by you that the above funds were misapplied or diverted to patronage for individuals and political parties. We deny vehemently that allegation and challenge you to name the specific party or parties that enjoyed the stated patronage.
"To the best of our knowledge and information no member party of the CNPP has received any funds whatsoever from this regime. As a matter of fact, we have been engaged in the past two years to ensure that INEC and the government respect constitutional provisions in Section 22(c) on annual grants for operations to political parties to no avail." CNPP said.
The CNPP, however, excluded the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) from its members who did not receive the grant 'for many reasons', adding that:
"In the first place, the PDP is not an active member of CNPP. Secondly, recent trends show that the PDP has benefited and it is been fingered in most financial scams such as the National ID scam in which the late Chief A.M. Afolabi claimed that proceeds from the deal were used to finance the PDP operations in the South West for the 2003 presidential elections.
Recently, in the N1.6 billion Plateau State funds, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) alleges that Governor Dariye transferred N100 million to PDP South West", CNPP noted.
